ICv2: June 2022 NPD BookScan | Pro Club Bd

Whether the comic is based on the show or the show is based on the comic, media connections were prominent in the Book Channel’s top 20 authored, manga, and superhero graphic novels charts that month, based on NPD BookScan Data provided for June 2022 (05/29/22 – 07/02/22) for ICv2.

Since the Netflix series is scheduled to premiere on August 5 (see “Date of the Sandman”), The Sandman took three spots on the superhero charts and, in an unprecedented show of power for ownership, four volumes of stranger things also mapped. And the author table contained three volumes of The young and three of Invincible, two series that increased their audience after being adapted for streaming.

Neil Gaimans The Sandman neatly bookends the superhero charts, with the reissue of The Sandman: Book One at number one, the second volume of the new edition at number 10 and the old edition of volume 1 (which contains less material and also costs less) at number 20.

Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons is in fourth place, and it’s the first of four stranger things title in the table. The newest is Stranger Things: The Tomb of Ybwen, which came out in April; the others are releases from 2020 or 2021. Volume 2 of the fourth season of the Netflix series premiered on July 1 (see “Stranger Things’ S4 Finale Trailer”), which may pique interest, but four volumes of this series on the charts to have is unprecedented. The first volume in the series sold well enough to make the top 20 on the adult charts when it first came out in May 2019 and stayed in the top 20 for three months. A volume has occasionally been in since then popped up on the superhero roster, but June 2022 marks the first time more than one tape has made the roster, let alone four. With a spinoff in the works (see Stranger Things spinoff), we’ll likely see more stranger things in the future on the superhero charts.

Four volumes of the Penguin Classics Marvel Collection announced last year (see “Penguin Classics Publishes Collected Editions of Marvel Comics”) made the charts. The hardcover edition of Spiderman second, paperback ninth, and hardback Captain America and Black Panther are at number 11 and 12. The hardcovers may sell better because these books appeal to collectors, but it’s also true that Amazon has discounted them to the point where they cost about the same as the paperbacks.

Amazon reports that the audience for The young has grown (see ‘The Boys’ News’), and with season three premiering on June 1, it’s not too surprising to see three volumes of the series in the top 20 for June. What is less clear is why three volumes Invincible made the chart; A second season is in the works, but no premiere date has been announced. The series topped our recent list of top graphic novel author franchises (see Top Graphic Novel Author Franchises Spring 2022), so it seems to be consistently popular.

The first six places in the list of authors are occupied by volumes Solo leveling and lore olympus, Both started out as webtoons, and we can expect Solo leveling to get a streaming boost when the anime launches on Crunchyroll next year (see “‘Solo Leveling’ Anime”).
