Jordan Peele seems prepared for it scare us and make us think again with nopehis third round as a director/writer in the horror genre. Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun will star in this sci-fi story, the details of which remain mostly a mystery to its potential audience – and that is entirely by Peele’s design. The reviews are meant to give us an idea of what to expect, though, and while they don’t all agree on how successful the film is, there’s no arguing among critics that Peele remains a master at creating suspense.
Target groups first reactions to the film were quite positive, with many praising the brother-sister duo of Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya. Rating the film 4.5 stars out of 5, Eric Eisenberg says Peele continues to make waves in Hollywood in a remarkable way, and with his third project he proves once again successful in dropping jaws and making viewers breathe unconsciously :
However, Polygon’s Robert Daniels disagrees. He says during nope will surely captivate and terrify audiences, unlikely to stick with them. While this reviewer refuses to call this film a “bad” film, it is the weakest of Jordan Peele’s trio, saying:
Shakefire’s Matt Rodriguez enjoys the ride nope delivers the audience and rates it 4 out of 5 stars. The director takes moviegoers on a rollercoaster ride, building the tension to the climax before winding it down so people can breathe before starting all over again. From the review:
THR’s Lovia Gyarkye says Jordan Peele, like his previous ventures, proves he’s not afraid of his imagination. While admitting that parts of the film don’t gel, this critic says nope is as entertaining as it is ambitious, and Peele does an excellent job of balancing the humor with the overall suspenseful mood:
Like the above critics, The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde notes that the director maintains a masterful level at creating suspense, and he does so several times throughout the film. However, the metaphor he’s trying to convey doesn’t come together, the review states:
