Released on July 24, 2022
It has been more than 3 years since One Punch Man season 2 was released. Will there be One Punch Man Season 3? What is the release date of One Punch Man Season 3? There are numerous questions on the minds of fans and I’m here to answer all of your questions.
The one punch man manga series is currently at its peak as the series pops up on social media every other day when a new manga chapter comes out. We’re going to talk about the upcoming One Punch Man season, but before that, it’s better to address the main issue behind the next season’s delay.
What went wrong in One Punch Man Season 2?
The first season of One Punch Man came out in 2015 and was an instant hit. The series was produced by Studio Madhouse and fans loved One Punch Man’s animation and humor.
The second season of the series came out in 2019 and didn’t do well at all. It was produced by JC Staff and the animation lacked the quality that fans saw in the first season.
Why did the studio change in One Punch Man season 2? The production committee (the investors) usually leases the anime studios for one or two anime seasons. Anime studios have a tight work schedule, so after finishing work on an anime, they move on to the next series.
For One Punch Man, the Madhouse studio was commissioned by the production committee to produce a season. After the huge success of the first season, Madhouse would certainly have been contacted again, but they had moved on to another project.
Studio JC Staff has been hired to animate the second season of One Punch Man. It usually takes an anime studio at least 2 years to produce a 12-episode anime series. JC Staff began work on Season 2 in October 2017 and released One Punch Man Season 2 in April 2019.
A year and a half to produce a 12 episode anime wasn’t enough. Because the studio rushed the anime adaptation, the animation quality was nowhere near that of One Punch Man season 1.
Season 2 wasn’t that profitable, and that’s one of the reasons why fans are still waiting for One Punch Man season 3.
One Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, who looks like a normal human but possesses superhuman physical strength and an amazing sense of humor. Saitama possesses unlimited power, allowing him to defeat opponents with the power of a single punch.
One Punch Man is based on the manga created by the author “ONE” who writes the original story as a webcomic, but the manga series based on the webcomic was drawn by Yusuke Murata.
One of the main reasons why the One Punch Man manga series is so popular is Yusuke Murata’s amazing drawing talent.
Are we getting One Punch Man Season 3?
There are three main factors that determine whether an anime series gets a new season or not? Having enough starting material, popularity and profitability. Let’s analyze all these factors and see what are the odds of One Punch Man Season 3 by the results.
The source material (light novel, webcomic or manga) is a pretty important factor. Because if there is no more source material to adapt, there is no chance of an anime sequel.
The show’s popularity is important to the production committee. The more popular a show is, the better chance it will sell and the production committee will get a return on its investment.
A show’s profitability is determined by analyzing Blu-ray sales and figure sales. Now that we know what the main factors are, let’s dive deeper.
One Punch Man season 3 source material
Although One Punch Man is a webcomic series written by ONE, the source material for the anime series is the manga adaptation drawn by Yusuke Murata.
Is there enough source material for Season 3? As of this writing, One Punch Man Manga has currently released more than 160 chapters. And the manga series is far from over. The manga chapters were collected into 26 volumes.
One Punch Man season 2 is adapted to volume 16 (chapter 84 of the manga), so there are enough manga chapters for season 3 and season 4. If the pace of the anime stays the same, one punch man season 3 will be adapted to chapters 130
One Punch Man Popularity
Despite the fact that the 2nd season was not liked by the fans, the popularity of the manga series has continued to grow. One of the main reasons for this popularity is Yusuke Murata’s amazing art style.
In 2021, One Punch Man was the top 50 best-selling manga in Japan. The manga series has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. The most recent One Punch Man Volume 26 was released in June and has already sold 200,000 copies.
The popularity of anime series has not decreased. According to MyAnimeList’s most popular anime list, One Punch Man Season 1 is the 4th most popular anime worldwide.
A live-action One Punch Man movie is in development by Netflix, proving that the series is popular in the US and Netflix is willing to invest in this franchise.
Was One Punch Man profitable last season?
Blu-ray sales are also an important factor playing into the renewal of the series. When a series sells more than 5000 copies, it is usually assumed that the series will get an anime adaptation as a sequel.
The first season of One Punch Man sold more than 11,000 copies, but the second season only sold 1250 copies. As you can see, there is a big difference between the Blu-ray sales of Season 1 and Season 2.
This is a big problem for investors or the production committee as they might hesitate to invest in the production of One Punch Man Season 3 after the low sales of Season 2 Blu-ray copies.
When it comes to figurines and merchandise, there are more than 1,100 official products that have been released over the years, which is a pretty good number. This means that the license holders make a lot of money and therefore release more figures and merchandise on a regular basis.
Although Season 2 had low Blu-ray sales, the official merchandise is selling well, making the previous seasons profitable.
One Punch Man season 3 rumors
In today’s modern world, an anime adaptation announcement has been leaked many times thanks to the insiders who post the information on Twitter before the anime team’s official announcement.
One Punch Man season 3 rumors are also circulating the internet, courtesy of @Jameshanson on Twitter who said One Punch Man season 3 was confirmed at its end. However, he clarified that this doesn’t necessarily mean Season 3 is in production. It could be in the planning phase or find staff, everything is possible.
This is the only rumor or leak we have so far from a trusted source. We will add more leaks/rumours in this section if they come from a reliable person.
One Punch Man season 3 release date
One Punch Man Season 3 will be released in early or mid-2024. There is no official release date announcement yet.
When can we expect an official release date announcement? One Punch Man’s other manga series, Mob Psycho, announced season 3 in May 2022 and is scheduled for release in October 2022, just 5 months after the announcement.
Before Mob Psycho season 3 was officially announced, there were no leaks or rumors of a sequel because the production committee decided to keep it a secret. This could also be the case for One Punch Man.
Studio Madhouse may already be working on One Punch Man Season 3, and we may get an official One Punch Man release date announcement later this year.
Is there a trailer for One Punch Man season 3?
At the time of writing, a One Punch Man season 3 trailer has not yet been released. The only thing that came closer to an official trailer was an original animation of 2 minutes, animated by Yusuke Murata. You can watch a 2 minute clip here.
For now, you can watch the One Punch Man Season 2 official trailer on the Viz Media official YouTube channel below:
Is the studio and staff available?
JC Staff, who produced the second season, is currently working on two anime projects: “The Duke of Death and his Maid Season 2“, and “In another world with my smartphone 2“.
I’m sure if the producers ask JC Staff to animate season 3 they won’t say no. But since fans didn’t like JC Staff’s animation, chances are One Punch Man season 3 will get a new studio.
Studio Madhouse, which animated the first season of One Punch Man, is currently working “Kin no Kuni Mizu no Kuni”and “Princess of the Bibliophile”. Madhouse is a big studio, it won’t be a surprise if they are already working on Season 3 of Saitama’s Adventures.
As important as the availability of an animation studio is, the director of the series is probably the most important person. The production committee is trying to hire the same director who did the previous seasons because all the major decisions about the animation are made by the director.
Season 2 director Chikara Sakurai has recently been working on two anime projects (Shenmue the Animation and Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai 2), and he is not currently working on any anime projects except maybe One Punch Man season 3 but he doesn’t officially direct any anime series.
Staff is available, but the production committee may be working out a deal with Studio Madhouse or finding a new studio.
Season 3 story
Season 2 ended with Saitama defeating the dragon-plane menace, Elder Centipede. One Punch Man Season 3 follows the Monster Association Arc, which will see viewers learn more about Gorou and the Monster Association Alliance.
There will be some crazy fighting as the story develops into an all-out war between the Monster Association and the Hero Association. Heroes like Atomic Samurai, Metal Knight and Child Emperor will be in action.
The series will also introduce some new villains to the story, including Fuhrer Ugly and Royal Ripper.
Final Thoughts on Season 3
All three main factors, source material, popularity and profitability speak for the third season of One Punch Man. It’s only a matter of time before we get an official announcement. Season 3 release in 2022 is almost impossible.
We’ll get the earliest official update during Crunchyroll Expo 2022, which is scheduled to take place August 5-7. We’re getting a Chainsaw Man trailer during Crunchyroll Expo, and who knows, Season 3 of OPM may also be announced during the event.
