In a case of life-inspiring art that in turn inspired more art, Marvel announced at Comic-Con today the creation of a true Infinity Gauntlet containing six precious gems including a ruby, an emerald, a sapphire, a diamond, a garnet and an amethyst. Together they are called the Infinity Collection of Gemstones.
Per Marvel, “the six stones total over 150 carats and have an estimated combined value of over $25 million.”
shark tank Unveiling the collectibles today, Star Daymond John revealed: “There will be a limited number of certified specimens and they will be available to the public in teardrop form.”
The debut of the collection is kind of a full circle moment. The Infinity Gauntlet in the comics has long been suspected of being inspired by a 16th-century Catholic relic: the incorruptible hand of Saint Teresa of Avila. The relic is said to be the saint’s actual hand, but in photos it appears to be metal rather than flesh, with rings on each finger holding precious gems. The new gauntlet and Infinity Collection of Gemstones appear to reflect the origins of the piece.
Paul Grid, SVP, Marvel Consumer Products, said in a statement, “Fans and collectors are a very important consumer for Marvel as they truly live the Marvel lifestyle every day and are always looking to engage with the brand in new and unique ways associate. We think this authentic gemstone collection is cool, unexpected and expanding the reach of the Marvel brand.”
Adam Mirzoeff, a fourth-generation jeweler and President of East Continental Gems, curated the collection, while Darren Romanelli, aka DRx, served as the collection’s creative director.
The Infinity Gauntlet made specifically for these gems was custom made by Gentle Giant Ltd., a quality collectible toy and consumer goods company.
Here is a description of all genuine stones and what they represent:
The Time Stone is a Colombian emerald, brilliant in colour. Documented by four gemological laboratories, this gem has no treatment and is almost 23 carats. In the Marvel Universe, the Time Stone has the ability to manipulate time, even in places beyond time.
The Space Stone is a sapphire from the island of Madagascar and weighs over 30 carats. In the Marvel Universe, the Space Stone allows its user to exist in any location, move through different realities, warp or rearrange space, teleport across planes, regardless of the laws of physics or magical barriers.
The Reality Stone is an oval over 15 carat natural ruby from Mozambique, Africa. In the Marvel Universe – quests, realities, concepts, visions – things that would normally be impossible to realize become possible with the Reality Stone. It can retroactively create alternate realities around these changes.
The power stone is an oval natural amethyst of more than 35 carats.
In the Marvel Universe, the Power Stone allows its users to access and manipulate all forms of energy as well as enhance their own physical strength and resilience. At full potential, the power stone can bestow omnipotence. In particular, the jewel enhances the effect of the five other stones; it’s like a key to start the engine of the Infinity Stones as a single collective force. The ultimate power behind the Power Stone – and why it sits alone in pride of place on the Infinity Gauntlet – is how the stone interacts with the others.
The Soul Stone is this cushion-shaped, orange-red spessartite garnet of over 35 carats. In the Marvel Universe, the Soul Stone served as an inspiration for everyone else. It can manipulate a person’s soul and essence, control life and death, and contains a pocket dimension called Soul World.
The Mind Stone is a rectangular brilliant cut yellow diamond of high clarity and intense color of nearly 35 carats. In the Marvel Universe, the Mind Stone allows its user to awaken or amplify psionic abilities such as telepathy and telekinesis. Combined with the power stone, it can even allow simultaneous access to all existing thoughts.
In conjunction with the SDCC debut, East Continental Gems will also be releasing a limited edition Reality Stone in September 2022 as part of a future collection to be announced at a later date.
